Coasteering for a couch potato

As you can see from the title, I am a self-confessed couch potato. I like my comfort zone, having a manicure and drinking red wine in an evening. So how, you ask, did I ever get involved in coasteering?

Great coasteering adventure Edinburgh
Blue skies and clear blue water of Scotland

I have always wanted to visit Edinburgh and decided I was going to persuade my husband and two teenage sons (aged 14 and 16) to come on a long weekend away. In order to convince them, I made a deal, I will plan one day – which was to visit Edinburgh Castle, afternoon tea at the Balmoral Hotel and an evening out at the Edinburgh Playhouse Theater, and they could choose what to do on our second day. Little did I know what I was getting myself in for!

The day arrived for our activity (at this point, I was still unaware of what we were doing). We all waited outside our hotel, and all I was told to wear was my swim suit under my clothes and bring a towel ( nice of them too book a spa day – oh how wrong I was!). A posh mini bus turned up to collect us, and the rest of the family looked excited.

The drive was a little over an hour, over the Edinburgh bridges to a place near St Andrews. The boys informing me what we were doing, as they clearly couldn’t resist the excitement. Coasteering!? I was very nervous to say the least.

It was time to start the adventure. We were given equipment to change into for the activity; it made us look like we were preparing for war – helmets, wetsuits and life jackets. I looked ridiculous, everyone did, but the family was loving it and the instructor told me just to rock it with confidence. There was a short walk up a hill, which revealed a view of the most incredible coastline I have ever seen. White sands, blue sky and views looking back across the water towards Edinburgh. It was very beautiful but I was still very nervous at this point.

The Coasteering Adventure

Ross gave us a thorough safety briefing informing us of exactly what we would be doing and talked about the correct way to jump into the water and climbing back out. Then we were off!  My kids went charging down the beach after Ross and I brought up the rear into the water. I didn’t even feel the cold water (apart from my hands), which I guess is why we wear wetsuits. We scrambled over, under and up rocks, did a bit of swimming and splashing about in the sea and started moving along the coast.

We went round this headland and then in a blink of an eye the boys and Ross had disappeared. Where were they? As we continued on for about 10 meters, we found them relaxing, in this natural hot tub feature. We all climbed in for a photo opportunity and while I question whether the water in there was any warmer, it was a very cool formation.

Jumps, Jumps Jumps!!!!

The next challenge was the jumps!!! I was terrified; I don’t even like jumping into a warm swimming pool. The first of the jumps was small, which suited me, and Ross explained we would start smaller and build ourselves up to the finale (a 10m jump). Which I was not going to be doing but the boys and my husband were loving it and really committing to the “flying ninja kicks”

The jumps kept getting bigger! Standing at the top of jump number 2, my knees were knocking with fright. The rest of my family had already launched themselves off and Ross was stood at the top with me, I think he could see the terror in my face. He was brilliant; in no way did I feel pressured. He slowly recapped the correct technique of jumping and made me feel totally at ease. I put my hands by my side and took a step forward. What a rush of adrenaline. Nothing could describe how I felt.

Coasteering is definitely an activity I would never have considered doing but I am so amazed that I did it and something we all enjoyed as a family. Massive thank you to Ross at Intredpidus Outdoors for helping me. It was certainly a day to remember and I can’t wait to show the GoPro pictures to my colleagues at work, they will never believe it!
