Transport
We have based the timings and locations for the Ultimate Scottish Roadtrip – 10 Day Guide on using a hire car. A hire car or campervan offers flexibility in exploring Scotland’s rural landscapes and quaint Highland villages. However, the route can easily be adapted to suit travellers using public transport. Scotland has an excellent train service that provides safe and reliable travel across the country, from the Scottish Borders to the Highlands. The Citylink bus service provides a more budget friendly option for visitors using public transport.

Day 1 – Edinburgh
Let’s start your roadtrip in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, where I recommend you spend the day exploring the cities historic and cultural highlights: starting with a visit to the iconic Edinburgh Castle, perched atop Castle Rock. I recommend taking a tour of inside the castle walls, however if that’s not for you, I would still recommend the walk up, Edinburgh Castle provides panoramic views across Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Moray Firth. Afterwards, take a stroll down the Royal Mile, where you can find a wealth of history, from St Giles’ Cathedral to Holyrood Palace.
After delving into the history of the city, there are plenty other ways to spend the rest of your day. For outdoor lovers, I recommend taking a walk up Arthur Seat. If you haven’t learned enough by visiting Edinburgh Castle, head to The National Museum of Scotland where you can further your knowledge of Scotland. For our on the grid social media lovers, there are plenty of cute photo spots in Edinburgh – Dean Village near Stockbridge. Visit the famous Grassmarket, or relax in The Botanical Gardens.

Day 2 – Stirling & Loch Lomond
Head northwest on day two toward Stirling, which is known for its grand medieval castle and the nearby Wallace Monument, a tribute to William Wallace. After briefly soaking up the history in Stirling, continue the picturesque drive west towards Loch Lomond. Along the way you will pass through some lovely picturesque villages and see some beautiful scenery of hills and lochs.
Loch Lomond is the perfect spot for switching off and enjoying a relaxing evening stroll by the shore before staying in one of the many beautiful accommodation spots nestled amongst the hills.
Accommodation in Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond has an abundance of accommodation types depending on your wants and needs. On the more luxurious side of the market is Cameron House, a beautiful hotel with stunning views of the loch. Stay in one of the many B&B’s for a more budget but comfortable stay, or for the ‘I’ll sleep anywhere’ travellers, check out Loch Lomond Hostel.
Day 3 – Glencoe
Leave Loch Lomond behind as you journey into the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most famous glens. As you drive through, you’ll be surrounded by towering mountains and rolling hills. Take time to hike one of Glencoe’s many trails, such as the Lost Valley or Glencoe Lochan, or enjoy the beauty of the valley from various viewpoints. For a cosy evening in, I recommend heading to the Clahaig Inn: a traditional Scottish pub hidden in amongst the hills, where you’ll often find outdoor enthusiasts enjoying a pint and some live music after an adventurous day in the Highlands.
Accommodation in Glencoe
A personal favourite of mine in Glencoe would be the Kingshouse hotel, although this is less on the budget side. Otherwise, I would highly recommend the Red Squirrel Campsite to get the true feeling of adventuring in the Highlands – although, be aware of the Midgeys between May and September!
The Kingshouse, Glencoe
Day 4 – Fort William
A short drive from Glencoe is Fort William – the next stop on the Ultimate Roadtrip of Scotland. Fort William is the gateway to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. If you left yourself enough time and are up for a challenge, embark on the climb to the summit; otherwise, enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area with a more leisurely hike or a ride on the scenic Nevis Range gondola. In the evening, take a stroll up the high street and unwind with a hearty meal at a local pub. I recommend having some traditional Scottish pub food and a local ale at the Ben Nevis Inn, located at the foot of Ben Nevis, on certain nights, you can also be greeted by some traditional Scottish folk music from local musicians.
Accommodation in Fort William
Fort William has a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. Budget-friendly choices include Chase The Wild Goose Hostel. For a mid-range stay, check out Nevis Bank Inn or the Alexandra Hotel which offer comfort and a short walking distance to the highstreet. For a more luxurious experience, Inverlochy Castle Hotel provides an elegant stay in a historic setting with stunning views of Ben Nevis.

Day 5 – Isle of Skye
On our Ultimate Roadtrip of Scotland, Day 5 is a slow travel day, where you can take in the scenery of Skye, before heading to some top spots on day 6. Before you leave Fort William, enjoy some breakfast with views of Ben Nevis at the Highland Soap Company Larder cafe. First, cross the Skye Bridge and enter the magical Isle of Skye, known for its rugged coastline, fairy pools, and dramatic landscapes, Skye is quintessentially Scottish and a must stop on any Scottish Roadtrip.
Alternative Route – On the sea!
Only a 40 minute drive from Fort William is Mallaig, a small fishing town on the West Coast where you can take a boat from the mainland to Skye. Taking the boat from Mallaig to Skye is a scenic and memorable journey across the Sound of Sleat. As you sail toward the Isle of Skye, you’re treated to stunning views of rugged coastlines, rolling hills, and distant mountains, offering a peaceful and picturesque way to begin your island adventure.

With its colorful harbor and bustling atmosphere, Portree is a great spot for wandering around. Here you can explore quaint locally owned shops and enjoy some traditional lunch. In the afternoon, head to the Fairy Pools for a magical walk through crystal-clear streams and waterfalls. The pools are perfect for a quick dip if you’re feeling brave! End the day with another night on Skye, taking in a stunning sunset over the water.

Budget travelers can opt for Portree Youth Hostel, while mid-range options like The Royal Hotel provides comfort and convenience in the heart of town. For a more luxurious stay, The Cuillin Hills Hotel offers stunning views of the harbor and surrounding landscapes.

For budget travelers, Inverness Youth Hostel and Black Isle Hostel provide affordable, comfortable options in the city center. If you’re seeking a more upscale experience Rocpool Reserve Hotel provides a touch of luxury with elegant rooms and fine dining.
Day 8 – Cairngorms National Park

From Inverness, head south into the stunning Cairngorms National Park, home to vast forests, dramatic peaks, and scenic lochs. Aim for Aviemore, approximately 2 hours south of Inverness, located in the heart of the park. In Aviemore Spend your day hiking, cycling, or even taking a wildlife tour to spot red deer and golden eagles. Aviemore, offers a great base for outdoor activities.
For dining, you can enjoy hearty meals at The Winking Owl or indulge in locally-sourced cuisine at The Old Bridge Inn, both offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere after a day of exploring the Cairngorms.

Dunkeld Cathedral, located in a picturesque village, offers history and a peaceful riverside setting. The Hermitage is a stunning woodland with walking trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls and towering trees. Blair Castle, just outside Pitlochry, is a grand historical site with sprawling gardens. Further south, Scone Palace near Perth is an iconic site where the crowning of Scottish kings took place.

For something more central, The Old Mill Inn provides comfortable four-star accommodations with an excellent restaurant. Atholl Palace Hotel is another option, featuring historic architecture, landscaped gardens, and a relaxing spa.
