I first met Bill in early 2010 when I went to Carmarthen for an information day about the Outdoor Education degree at Trinity. After maybe 40 seconds it was clear that this guy was like nobody else I had ever interacted with before. And, on completing the 15 or 20 minute interview, all other ideas I had for what I could do with the next few years of my life vanished into insignificance; I was certain that there was something special about this colourfully dressed, energetic yet intense dude that was missing the tip of one of his fingers. To butcher the quote from Calvin Candy “[he] had my attention”.
During my 3 years at Trinity and the seasons of guiding afterwards, Bill exceeded every expectation as a teacher and a mentor. He took what could only be described as a difficult character under his wing and, like a lighthouse, was a constant source of guidance as I navigated my fair share of rocky outcrops. The example he set as a lecturer and outdoorsman, opportunities he gave me outwith the degree and professional support he provided from day one right up until I was out of my depth running MYAdventure for the first time, represents a truly priceless education.
Bill was very much the immovable object that the unstoppable force that was my ambition, enthusiasm, arrogance, and total lack of experience, needed to be channeled into anything resembling competence. The lessons Bill taught, mostly implicitly through the examples he set and the way in which he operated, shaped me and underpins everything I do professionally all these years later. Furthermore, these principles are a fundamental guide to the businesses we run, outdoor experiences we deliver and instructors we train.
Here are just a few Bill lessons, in no particular order:
Don’t pee in a dry suit
Colour coordination with kit is key
It’s not okay to throw a carabiner off a cliff, regardless of how shit it is (sorry Chris!)
Be a professional in everything you do
Don’t have a TV in the stores
Humility and egotism is a tightrope everyone walks
Always be nice to the person whose job it is to book the mini bus, especially when they forget to book the mini bus
Keep your work space tidy
Bright helmets are right, black and white helmets are shite
When lost on a mountain, have a cup of tea before trying to relocate
Shiney gear is a red flag
Lower someone experiencing a rigging problem to the ground before explaining to them how to fix the rigging problem
Have a wife that can stop a ferry driver in a foreign country from going to home, so you can still get back to your hotel
Trousers and long sleeves in spikey environments are essential
A strong Russian accent is a legitimate and effective deescalation tool
Remember to check in to flights before getting to the airport
Saying “Davey from the village said you were the man to speak about getting on the river” trumps a “No Canoeing” signs on driveways
Make sure the Bothy is still a bothy, not a locked hunting lodge, in Scotland, in winter, when snowing, before walking to it without a tent
Sometimes you have to be serious to emphasise a point
Occasionally you have to tell someone to fuck off
Don’t ask questions to show how smart you are
Not everyone likes big swell
Bridges get washed away
Set the example
Panic and positivity are contagious; act accordingly
Time keeping is desirable but not essential #BillTime
It’s better to jump first than last, but second is better than first
Grades are negotiable
Competence + Currency is key
Don’t forget to smile
During my first two years at Trinity, the School of Sport and Outdoor Education was in a skanky portacabin in a car park between the student union and my second year halls. Bill’s office was on the right of the cabin and when you walked in, taped to the left of his twin screens was a Hunter S Thompson quote printed on A4, it read:
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, ‘Wow! What a ride!’”
In the years we were close, Bill operated at a high cadence and left a strong wake; with work, play and family he was all in all the time. His energy was unmatched and his attitude contagious, at least to those of us trying to keep up! I have some great memories, look back at the lessons that I learned as if I was being taught by Rusticus himself, and feel blessed to have been given the opportunity.
