Lock down has been challenging for us all, I can only imagine what its been like for the wee ones. When I speak about wee ones I am being broad, I have 3 boys aged 5 years, 10 years and 14 years. Going from being able to interact at school and out side with your friends to being told to stay away from them just in case…… House bound or back garden if your lucky for weeks on end, small trips to the local beach (When its not packed with others doing the same) or walks to the shops.
At first it was a little fun, no school time in the house to play with there toys or consoles and of course spending time with parents. This quickly turned to boredom, annoying each other, parents telling you to keep the noise down there working and of course not interacting with peers.
Lock down has meant creativity for our family, the 3 boys who are used to adventuring outside wanted to still spend time outside while acting responsibly and following rules. Below is a list of creative things we done to keep us entertained, some of the list obviously was when we where on slightly relaxed rules (Level 2/3)
Our top 3 Adventure lock down activities where:
3) Dog walking So taking the dog a walk is not always an adventure, but with a little planning and the scan of a map it can be for both you and your four legged companion. We have explored of every woodland path there is in walking distance of a 5 year old. This would always start from the house, filling the rucksack with goody’s and spare warm clothes because Scotland. I would try hard to make sure we were bypassing a coffee shop keeps the adults happy. The aim of the walk was to find somewhere we haven’t been before even if it means walking over muddy fields, or scrambling up hills. The dog would lead normally with my 5 year old and we would follow, a few times I would make a scavenger list to entertain us. Carrying sticks, stones and leaves and pointing out animals and trees where all on our list. I would try and pass over some of my knowledge and then google the rest to keep interesting facts (Well not always interesting but passes the time). Although its not one of our more adventurous adventures such as Canoeing or camping this has been one of the easiest and has helped us get through a lot of the lock down days.
2) Hill walking (Pentland hills)
We are lucky to live next to the Pentland hills, this is a large group of hills that surround the south of Edinburgh. This involves a little more packing and preparing, picnic, waterproofs, first aid kit, spare clothes just in case, fully charged phone and a map. The map wasn’t really used as I know these routes but is good to get the kids looking at maps to learn. Letting the kids lead up what must seem like Everest sometimes with tornados (wind and rain) or through quick sand (Bog) is a proper adventure. Then getting to the top and having that achievement of seeing everything so tiny like ants. One of the best things for me was that for sure the house is completely quiet bed time isn’t madness as there little legs are already asleep.
Canoeing (Union Canal)
We have been lucky to be able to access canoes and paddle boards (these can be hired from lots of places). The canal is a great place to go with small kids and provides a great space to learn so when we are aloud we can get out on rivers for a big adventure. Playing pirates and stopping at the little island to take it over is great fun. Because we don’t do this all the time as soon as I mention it the boys go wild, getting the canoes, paddles, buoyancy aids and other equipment then driving to the venue all be it a 10 minute drive feels like an adventure itself. Deciding who’s in what boat and then getting in the boats can be slightly stressful but once we get going you totally forget there’s a pandemic. Heading east on the canal is very relaxing some nice views and wild life. These adventures are just a few of our favourite and just some of the adventures that have helped get through lockdown.
