Sally and Sam’s first Scottish canyoning adventure
Me and my boyfriend were up in Scotland, Edinburgh on a city break. After exhausting all of the usual tourist attractions of castles and dungeons, we were in search of an adrenalin-fueled adventure to really make our holiday perfect! After scouring the internet, we found Intrepidus Outdoors that really stood out from the crowd. Their activities such as coasteering, canyoning and mountain biking were exactly what we were looking for and their excellent TripAdvisor reviews and amazing youtube videos had us sold.
We booked a last minute canyoning adventure with Intrepidus Outdoors and the next day Ross collected us from our accommodation in a fancy mini-bus, and our adventure began. As we had done some research on canyoning and read about other peoples experience, we kind of new what to expect. However we were still nervous – Ross immediately put us at ease and it was clear that he was extremely experienced and we were clearly in safe hands.
When we arrived at Dollar Canyon which was only a short drive from Edinburgh. We changed into our canyoning equipment and listened to the safety briefing, this is when the prospect of what we were about to embark on really hit us! Ross thoroughly explained how the ropes and the carabineers worked and we were able to practise the process of abseiling in the safety of the car park. Then we set off on a short walk to the top of the canyon getting glimpses of what we would soon be jumping, sliding, zip wiring and abseiling through. My heart was pounding!
Splash!! Before we knew it, we had just slid down a mini-waterfall into a plunge pool, it was a perfect waterslide into the clearest water I have ever seen. For somebody that usually feels the cold, the excellent wetsuits resulted in us barely noticing that we had just been swimming about in Scottish mountain water. We continued down the canyon and traversed over a rocky section until we reached an enclosed drop which was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. This crazy but amazing situation got even better as we were clipped onto a zip line that took us over this waterfall, it was surreal!
After a few more jumps and slides we were starting to sense the larger waterfall that we had got glimpses of from the path. We were correct, Ross explained that this section is split into two abseils, one smaller which would be done first and then a larger (17m) abseil. It was at this point, that Ross gave us a clear re-run of how to abseil, answering as many questions as we wanted, repeating things numerous times to ease our nerves. After holding it together down the first, shorter descent, we were now looking down at a 17m vertical drop with a waterfall cascading down between the rocks. The only option was to keep going!!! After another quick pep talk from Ross, one at a time, we made our way down one of the most insane things I have ever-seen, let alone abseiled down. To look back up at where we had just been was an extremely satisfying feeling. The sheer verticalness, the thousands of gallons of rushing water crashing into the pool below was an achievement that I am so proud of.
We had no previous experience in an outdoor adventurous activity such as this, however it leaves you wanting more and in the capable hands of the Intrepidus Outdoors team I am sure that he could guide anybody down a canyon. What an adventure, we can’t wait to go again!
